Ilkley Sets Sights on Becoming the Inaugural UK Town of Culture 2028

Mar 4, 2026

Ilkley BID is excited to announce that we are officially leading the town’s bid for the first-ever UK Town of Culture title. Working in partnership with Ilkley Town Council and local community groups, we have submitted an Expression of Interest to the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS).

This new national competition is designed to shine a light on the unique stories and creative heart of towns outside major cities. If successful, Ilkley would host a prestigious six-month cultural programme in 2028, backed by £3 million in funding.

Why Ilkley?

From the celebrated Ilkley Literature Festival to our vibrant theatre scene and community festivals, Ilkley has long been a cultural heavyweight. This bid is about celebrating that heritage while creating new opportunities for every resident and visitor to engage with the arts.

“We may be a small town, but our cultural reputation is exceptional,” says Sarah Brookfield-Almond, Ilkley BID Manager. “This is an opportunity to build on our status as the ‘Best Place to Live’ and ensure culture remains inclusive and accessible for everyone.”

We expect to hear an update on the shortlist this Spring. Stay tuned to our news feed for the latest developments as we champion Ilkley on the national stage.
